This past Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to ban plastic bags at supermarkets and pharmacies. The bill mandates the use of biodegradable plastic bags or paper bags. The ban will be phased in over 6-12 months. The hope is that this ban will not only reduce the amount of plastic bags produced, but also allow for more efficient recycling, cleaner city streets, and reduction of trash to the landfills.
While San Francisco may be the first city stateside to ban plastic bags, South Africa, Taiwan, parts of India, Bangladesh, and Paris all have some form of plastic bag ban, and Ireland has imposed a plastic bag tax that has been hailed as a success. Only time will tell how effective the ban in San Francisco will be, but get out your tote bags to give it a push in the right direction!
